Duo Boots film for Spring Collection

With the help of Mendip Media’s catwalk product videos, specialist fashion footwear firm, Duo Boots, has a definite spring in its step this winter.

Despite the difficult trading conditions, Duo continues to appeal to fashionistas across the board with its high quality range of shoes and boots. And increasingly its sales are coming from the easy-to-use ecommerce platform the company has developed.

Video completes the shopper’s all round experience of the product. Giving the customer the in-store experience of seeing the footwear in action is an important part of the buying process.

“Filming great boots and shoes in an aspirational setting is a joy,” says director Nicky Robertson. “Every style is different and a revelation; filming the spring catalogue for Duo is a great antidote for the winter blues!”

The full range of Duo Boot’s spring collection video will be available in the New Year.

The Big Give

Mendip Media has doubled its donation to the company’s long time charity of choice, Ape Action Africa, by getting involved in the Big Give.

The Big Give is an annual initiative open to over 8000 charities, which will double a donation in a given time slot. Funded by the Reed Foundation, the money that a donor gives to the charity of its choice goes further for a good cause.

With increasing numbers of traumatised young chimps and gorillas, casualties of the bush-meat trade and logging, being re-homed at Ape Action Africa’s sanctuary in West Africa, the need for medicine and veterinary care is urgent.

Mendip Media’s support of this precious resource in the care and conservation of primates in their natural environment will hopefully help raise awareness of the critical situation facing the survival of these endangered species.

What’s the difference between a Labrador and Lhaso Apso? You’ll find the answer at the Kennel Club’s Discover Dogs event at Earl’s Court, which is where Mendip Media filmed dozens of pedigree dogs and their owners on behalf of sponsors Royal Canin.

The short films will feature on the company’s website to show owners the huge variety of specially blended food Royal Canin produces for particular breeds.

According to qualified vets every breed has different nutritional requirements and finding the right mix of fibre, minerals and proteins makes a huge difference to a pet’s wellbeing.

They say never work with animals; on this occasion the hand-picked pooches behaved themselves impeccably making light work for Andy and Dan on the cameras.

GO Outdoors go with Mendip Media

One of Britain’s fastest growing outdoor clothing retailers, GO Outdoors, has selected Mendip Media as a long term video partner after tough competition that took the team to Derwent Water to film several pilot videos.

With plans to produce hundreds of product videos, GO recognised Mendip Media’s expertise in scaling up production of video demonstrations for both ecommerce web pages and social media networks.

CEO of GO Outdoors, John Graham, says “ we want to make sure that GO customers have our product demonstrations in their pockets on mobile and that they can see them in our stores. This is an important project for us going forward; we want to use video to show why certain products work for individual GO customers.”

Mendip Media begins filming with GO in November in the Peak District . Director of Photography, Matt Ward says, “it’s a huge opportunity to be innovative in how we shoot the products in a format that we’ve created for the company. We’ll be filming them where they are meant to be worn – outdoors, which poses all sorts of challenges.”

After the stunning success of Bristol Zoo’s Wow Gorilla campaign, Mendip Media is supporting affiliated charity Ape Action Africa in its drive to raise awareness of the plight of chimps, gorillas and monkeys orphaned by bushmeat trade in Cameroon.

The charity will hold an ‘Out of Africa’ autumn dinner to raise money for its ape rehabilitation centre in Mefou Forest near Yaounde on Friday 7th October. Director of the centre and guest speaker, Rachel Hogan, will give a talk on her extraordinary experiences raising young primates who have been rescued from terrible conditions after their troop has been decimated by hunters.

Mendip Media Director, Nicky Robertson says, “this is a rare opportunity to hear an expert share her knowledge of running a busy centre for primates, and to show our support for the incredible work Ape Action Africa does on the front line of conservation.”

There are still tickets available for the event. All proceeds go directly to the charity and will help to feed and look after the hundred or so primates in its care.

Camera Crew Says Guten Tag Munich

Munich in late spring greeted Mendip Media’s events camera team as they stepped off the flight from the UK to film an anniversary bash on behalf of the Institute of Physics. The EPL Symposium at the Bavarian Academy of Science and Humanities was an important date in the Continental calendar for physicists, who gathered to celebrate quarter of a century of cutting edge scientific research in Europe.

The event included prestigious speakers including Luisa Cifarelli and Michael Schreiber, both of whom were interviewed on camera by the IoP team.

And filming at the world famous Hofbräukeller, where Bavarian hospitality includes cracking open a beer barrel and drinking steins of larger, was a treat.

“It’s been a fascinating two days mingling with some of Europe’s finest scientists at an event with a real buzz,” says Mendip Media’s Director, Nicky Robertson. “And, of course, we enjoyed the whole Munich experience.”

All the Fun of the Fair

If you ever wondered where to go ‘squibbing’ look no further than the Bridgwater Carnival in November, or at Mendip Media’s online video and DVD which will be produced in a 48-hour turnaround after the event. You’ll not only see the time honoured affair of hand held fireworks also known as squibbing, but dozens of Somerset’s finest floats in a show that rivals the Nottinghill Carnival.

After winning the tender to produce the Carnival’s DVD, Mendip Media has been swatting up on the heritage of an event stretching back to November 5th 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his buddies tried to blow up Parliament. These days, with Bridgwater attracting thousands onto the streets at the beginning of the Carnival season, the procession is more good-natured than anarchic.

Filming such a large outdoor event held on a winter’s night has its challenges, but also highlights. The floats are community based and feature some outstanding costumes, dance routines and technical wizardry.

Director of Mendip Media, Nicky Robertson says, “it’s great to be working with a local event that gives so much to charity and continues Somerset’s long tradition of lighting up the dark with revelry!”

Clifton College Gets Hands on With Nature

It was a blustery weekend in Bristol’s Millennium Square as Mendip Media teamed up with Clifton College to film at the Bristol Festival of Nature. The three-day festival celebrated wildlife, nature and science. All the colour, fun and excitement was captured on camera and can be seen on the Clifton College website.

As part of its community outreach programme, Clifton College sponsors the Festival’s Schools’ Day with workshops, science demonstrations and opportunities to experiment. The activities are free to all Key Stage 2 pupils, and offer opportunities for youngsters to get hands on with wildlife and science.

Mendip Media’s CSR charity Ape Action Africa also exhibited at the Festival, with Mendip Media’s very own Graham Godwin-Pearson donning a gorilla suit for the day. The charity runs a sanctuary in Cameroon for primates orphaned by the bushmeat trade.

“We’re really pleased to be working with Clifton College on its many educational projects both inside and outside school”, commented Director of Mendip Media Nicky Robertson. “Bristol’s Festival of Nature is a superb event for schools and families and we’re proud to be a small part of it.”
The Mendip Media team has been on its customary road trip the Lake District, not for a half term break in the sunshine, but to film almost 40 products for Lakeland Summer Catalogue.

The filming of Lakeland’s kitchen and household items took place over 4 days in the luxury house that doubles as a film location for the country’s premiere retailer. With over five hundred short video demonstrations under its belt for Lakeland, the Mendip Media team continues to deliver material that allows the customer to see how the company’s products works.

And recent analytics conducted by the company now demonstrates that hundreds of thousands of Lakeland consumers are watching the videos and 40% are buying directly as a result.

Mendip Media’s Camera Director, Matt Ward says, “we have a long standing relationship with Lakeland and to be able to film kitchen gadgets and utensils in such a beautiful area of the country is fantastic!”

Duo Boots Struts its Stuff

A midsummer shoot to show off Duo Boots Winter Collection meant that Mendip Media’s film crew were indoors working on a gloriously sunny day. 70 short ecommerce videos later the team emerged with stylish product videos that will appear on the client’s site within the next few weeks.

Filming took place in a minimalist house of glass and wood on the outskirts of Bristol, making the perfect setting for this fashionable brand.

The videos will be used to show the customer how each boot and shoe fits when it is worn. The aim is to give the customer as close to an in-store shopping experience as possible whilst online.

Camera operator, Matt Ward, had the delicate task of ensuring a tricky camera move was perfect every time. His job was made harder by having to contend with the bright light outside, but using daylight Kinos and some ingenious screening, he was able to create a naturalistic and product sensitive series of videos.

Nicky Robertson, Director at Mendip Media commented, “it has been a very productive shoot and great to produce video for this rapidly developing business … sadly none of the shoes were my size!”

Bristol Port Launches Video Promotion

The Bristol Port Company has commissioned Mendip Media to produce a promotional video its stand at the large Multimodal Exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC. Filming was done and dusted at Bristol’s commercial docks on a bright, cold day in near perfect weather.

The day begun with shots of a coal train being loaded by well-practiced digger drivers who filled the freight wagons 90 tons at a time. Later the crew picked up footage of the Port’s automated loading system shovelling coal down a chute into a continuously moving train.

From here the team moved on to film in the giant silos that store mountains of grain from all over Europe and then onto the hub of operations in the port control room. From here the director was able to record the Port’s day-to-day operations organising the flow of traffic in and out of the docks.

After the blessing of fine weather and some exciting footage, Mendip Media Director Nicky Robertson said, “it’s been great to see the diversity of Bristol Port and to work with the company to showcase what’s going on on our doorstep.”

Mendip Media welcomes two fresh faces to the Bristol team. Will Lane & Priya Purmanan are both interns from the University of the West of England and will work with the digital agency for the next couple of months.

Will lived and went to school in Kent, before taking a gap year doing charity work and travelling in Tanzania’s poorest region, Singida. He then studied Politics for three years and trained with the Territorial Army in Bristol. He’s now keen to find out more about online marketing.

Before her course in graphic design at UWE, Priya worked for a publishing firm and was involved in all aspects of the business. She went on to complete a foundation year in art, media and design before going on to finish her three year degree. During her time at university, Priya used her experience to help others as a student mentor.

Mendip Media Director, Nicky Robertson says, “it’s a great leap forward for the business to take on two such great people, who will add strength and depth to the company. I hope that we’ll be able to give them a good grounding in what we do and if they’re successful to go forward to full employment.”

Bristol Port goes Ultra Large for Multimodal 2011

The Bristol Port Company runs one of the most productive and technically advanced ports in Europe. It has commissioned Mendip Media to create a promotional video for its exhibition stand at Multimodal 2011, which will incorporate a celebration of two decades under the leadership of Terence Mordaunt and David Ord.

The video will be 3-4 minutes long and designed for Plasma screens and the Internet. This flexibility will allow Bristol Port to use the footage in presentations as well as the Internet, and will show how ambitious the company is in its development of a deep sea container dock for eight Ultra Large Ships.

Aimed at freight companies building the new generation of containers, bigger than anything currently in service, Bristol will be able to serve fleets that other ports in the South of England are incapable of harbouring.

“It will be rewarding to make a promotional video for this important local business, promoting and furthering Bristol’s rich shipping heritage into the new decade.” Says Mendip Media Director, Nicky Robertson.

Royal Canin Top Tips for Pet Owners

Royal Canin, a division of Mars Pet Food, wanted 12 video clips to go on the Royal Canin website to show dog and cat owners how to properly look after their pet’s health.

Together with Mendip Media the marketing team have come up with a series of short video vet examinations that focus on different aspects of canine and feline wellbeing.

First time video stars Jake, the terrier and Jensen, a bubbly black Labrador, were on best behaviour during the filming. Sadly, Royal Canin’s boss cat, Bobby, was less accommodating and was sent home early.

“It was an interesting experience working so closely with a vet and animals in a small space”, says Andy Varma, Mendip Media’s Camera Director. “They always say never work with children and animals, but in this case caution was thrown to the wind and with professionalism in the face of adversity, everything went smoothly”.

Royal Canin hope the short videos will give owners a guide to their pet’s wellbeing and how to check their basic health. The videos will go live at the end of March and can be found on Royal Canin’s website and You Tube channel.
Mendip Media will be filming a gathering of eminent physics scientists on location in Munich in May. The 25th anniversary symposium of the European Physics Letters Journal is taking place at the Bavarian Academy of Science to celebrate quarter of a century of discussion, debate and deliberation amongst a partnership of 17 countries.

“It’s a huge privilege to be asked to film this event,” says Director of Mendip Media, Nicky Robertson. “The calibre of the audience in addition to the speakers, testifies to the importance of the shared knowledge that the symposium will generate, and hopefully our video interviews and summary of the occasion will make this more accessible.”
So you’ve just bought home a cute, fury, wet nosed bundle of fur, and it’s the first time you’ve had a dog in the house. Help! Royal Canin, the premium pet food brand, is about to ride to the rescue with an updated version of its Puppy pack and video.
Mendip Media is busy remastering the Royal Canin Puppy DVD, which delivers easy to follow information about all things connected with the small creature in your midst.

Aimed at first time owners and those new to a different breed of dog, the DVD gives advice on diets and puppy training, giving a steer on the dos and don’ts of looking after your new dog.

“This is a really good functional use of video,” says Director of Mendip Media Video, Sarah Brooks. “With DVDs you have to have a reason to put them into the player and there can’t be a better reason than learning how to look after your pet.”
Expanding boot and shoe retailer, Duo Boots, is filming its spring and summer range this month in a Dragon’s den. Mendip Media will produce the fashion shoot at Duncan Bannatyne’s newly acquired spa hotel, the Charlton House in Somerset.

The Italianate floors and stripped back brickwork make the perfect backdrop for the lifestyle aspirations of the trend setting brand.

“With soft lighting and a really vibrant atmosphere, we’re throwing off the puritan white background of a studio and injecting some catwalk texture into the footwear demonstrations”, says lead cameraman, Matt Ward.

The new range is due to launch on 14th January with the video there to show off the fit and stylishness of the products.

Lakeland Launch for Spring Range

Christmas shopping may be underway for most of us, but for the high street & ecommerce kitchenware retailer Lakeland, Spring is in the air. This week Mendip Medial completes a series of video demonstrations for the new online spring catalogue to be launched on Christmas Eve.

Filmed in early November, the video demonstrations tackle kitchen utensils from food processors to coffee makers, and add to the growing Lakeland online video catalogue.

“Lakeland pushes the boundaries with its commitment to demonstrating products through online video, and this has allowed us to experiment with how to produce volume required whilst retaining the quality”, says Mendip Media’s Director, Nicky Robertson.

The key to keeping the demonstrations fresh is by innovating and improving on a tested formula. 2011 should be an interesting year in taking the project up a gear!

Mendip Media launches a Media Training service this week with a series of workshops for the Institute of Physics.

Aimed at print journalists, who have branched into camera presentation, the half day training will sharpen their raw talent and give them confidence to become professional video journalists.

Mendip Media ‘s Associate Produce, Kevin Redpath, has designed a hands-on course to keep the journalists on their toes. “If they think they’ll be listening to a PowerPoint presentation they are wrong. We’ll be putting them through their paces and seeing what they can do in front of camera when under a little bit of time pressure.”

Sporty Cider Kicks For Glory

When Magners took over the reins of Constellation’s cider division earlier this year, it bought itself the West Country’s most sporty brand – Blackthorn.

Associated especially with rugby, Blackthorn is ubiquitous at rugby grounds from Exeter to Gloucester, but nowhere is it more revered than at the Rec in Bath.

So when Vicky Walker, Blackthorn’s brand manager needed an upbeat, brand focussed video for a major presentation to the Magners’ board, she asked Mendip Media to produce an HD clip with more power than an Olly Barkley conversion.

And like this year’s Bath squad, the video was a winner. The good news for Mendip Media was that payment came in cider as well as cash!

Windturbine PR Causes Turbulence for Quango

Since starting a strong publicity drive, as part of Mendip Media’s ongoing PR work with Coemi Windturbines to highlight the real crisis in the renewables sector over product accreditation, the message is beginning to hit home with government departments.

After articles in the Guardian and Power & Energy Solutions Europe secured by Mendip Media press releases, and with the advent of a new government committed to developing the renewable sector, the issue of accreditation for all wind turbine suppliers is coming to a head.

“The huge costs involved to test just one wind turbine model are simply overwhelming to most suppliers in this fledgling industry,” says Coemi’s Managing Director, Paul Young. “Mendip Media grasped the complexity of the situation from the start, and has run with this to the extent that their publicity is really beginning to make a difference.”

Mendip Media Director, Nicky Robertson adds, “without accreditation, buyers of these expensive turbines cannot apply for the grants available to kick start micro generation in the UK. It’s a story of red tape and miscommunication which is causing turmoil the wind industry, and thanks to our work journalists are starting to sit up and take notice.
Teaching camera work and film structure to first year broadcast media students at Strode College is Mendip Media’s first foray into mentoring.

Mendip Media is on the home straight preparing for its Honda shoot. Locations and crews have been confirmed and the creative elements are in place.

The painstaking process of putting together an ambitious promotional film has been an inspired journey involving the product team at Honda UK, the marketing agency in Taunton and Mendip Media’s in-house artistic director and production facility.

Although we now see the three months of work on the project are coming to fruition, the proof that preparation is everything will be in the pudding.

It’s a reminder that filming is as much to do with preparation as the actual location shoots and post-production, and that the behind-the-scenes management has equal billing at the end of the day.

Filming begins at the end of May and the final promotional video will be ready for its first public viewing in June.

Video Comms for Cutting Edge Technology

Mendip Media kicks off May’s packed production schedule with a film for leading environmental technology company, Coemi, to profile its state-of-the-art Skywing Wind Turbines.

The small wind turbine industry in the UK is one of the government’s great ‘green’ hopes in getting the country back on its feet whilst at the same time achieving environmental targets established at Brussels last year.

Coemi is a leading importer and installation expert of top-of-the-range wind turbines for microgeneration. It sells to farmers, landowners, caravan parks, industrial estates, depots and public sector organisations, like hospitals. Its biggest wind turbine is an 18ft tower that produces 50Kwph at top speed.

Mendip Media’s crew will be at the fixing of a 20Kw Skywing in Devon, and will follow every stage of its journey from arrival and checks to the easy hydraulic installation upwards into the wind and finally the link into the grid.

The video will be online at the end of May and will be used by Coemi’s regional reps as a sales tool.

Blowing Away Confusion on Clean Energy Payments

Mendip Media has broken an emerging story about incompetence and chaos in the government’s wind energy policy on behalf of its client, Coemi.

As one of the UK’s leading wind turbine installers, Coemi, has been dismayed to find out that a compulsory certification scheme for each wind turbine model sold in the UK cannot be implemented because of lack of testing facilities and huge costs.

Without the certificate, customers who have bought the powerful 18 metre high wind turbines stand to loose out on a feed in tariff paid by the government for clean energy.

Coemi’s director, Paul Young, says, “this could demolish the wind turbine industry in the UK as there is only one place in Scotland set to deal with around 90 installers.

“Each model requires six months’ testing and costs around £30,000 per turbine yet there are just eight test pads to carry out that certification.”

The confusion surrounding the implementation of the long awaited FITS (feed in tariff scheme) means that potential investors in wind energy may now delay purchasing the high tech wind turbines which will threaten the future of clean energy microgeneration in the UK.
Video testimonials as standard; at least that’s what forward thinking companies believe gives them the edge on website. And Mendip Media has been on the road to film a series of strong, well-lit referrals.

Bath based brand agency thehouse, commissioned us to film one of its clients, Diageo, giving them a glowing reference. This will be top and tailed and be on thehouse website within 24 hours.

It may look easy, but a testimonial requires subtle lighting and interview skills to tease out the best comments.

“It’s always the filming that looks the easiest – like general views of a city and interviews – that require experience and skill to get them looking good,” says Mendip Media’s camera director, Matt Ward. “Very often you’ve only got one shot at it so it’s got to count.”
Video inserts filmed by Mendip Media will play a central role in Connecting Bristol’s ‘Green, Social & Open’ event in March. The presentation is a multimedia look at Bristol’s use of ICT to enhance modern living in one the UK’s most pleasant cities.

The event comprises of a series of comic sketches showing how the city’s three big communities represented by the public sector, voluntary organisations and small business, see communication technology through the prism of green, social and open.

It’s a quirky departure from the usual PowerPoint fair doled out at conferences and seminars. The play has been written by Richard Conlon, who authored a similar event for Connecting Somerset in 2009, and should raise a few smiles and nods from a packed auditorium.
How MPs and candidates can harness the ‘Obama effect’ in the UK, and why they should be doing that now.

With the Conservative Party conference now over, hundreds of MPs and PPCs and looking at ways to spread the message, open dialogues with voters and have the biggest effect at the General Election.

The usual constraints of budget, time and resources still apply, but somehow voters want more – a personal experience, information when and where they want it and talking points to share in the pub or at the bus stop.

We are developing next-generation websites with Conservatives to deliver just that, in a clear, accessible way that builds communities online, on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and others.

Flexible, intuitive, secure and with time-saving automation features, the model is the market leader in websites for Conservative politicians.
Your website can reduce costs, improve efficiency, engage voters better than ever before and even bring donations and assistance in to your campaign.
Focussing on four rural industries - fishing, cider making, willow weaving and peat extraction, the 3 minute film combines archive footage with newly shot material of modern day practices.
"This takes our display to a new level and is the first time we've combined the artefacts and their narrative with a carefully conceieved film display", says Museum Manager, Estelle Gilbert. "We're delighted with what Mendip Media has achieved."

Manchester and London offered two very different settings for Peugeot’s take on two of their most popular models – the re-launched 4007 SUV and the dapper about-town 308.

Mendip Media was there to capture the flavour of the daylong photo-shoots for the online Ezine produced by Bristol based publisher Specialist.

Olympic BMX star, Shanaze Reade, was on hand to give a total sports feel to the tough 4007 - which easily cruised the massive berms or banked hills at Manchester brand new BMX track. Using clever lighting to snap stunning jumps by the cycle athlete, the photographers created a gritty, urban look to complement the car’s robust image.

Pinewood studio was the more sedate setting for an intense day of special effects. The Specialist team lit the space and showed off the 308 at its very best.

Commissioned to explore the conceptual vision of one of the UK’s most prolific and famous sculptors, Mendip Media has been on an extraordinary filming odyssey.

At 83, when most octogenarians are taking it easy, David Wynne is a remarkable, single-minded artist. His most well known sculptures are in front of the PepsiCo Headquarters (Grizzly Bear) in LA and on London’s Embankment (Boy with Dolphin).

The short video clip captures the sculptor at home amongst his maquettes and object d’art.

In conversation and at work, he talks about his sculptures and how his philosophy of being true to the subject has led him to a heightened realism that at once both respects the true physicality of form whilst exposing the inner being caught in a moment of movement.

Peugeot Packages a Video Punch

As Peugeot fully embraces online, Mendip Media has produced 3 ‘top gear’, style video brochures to help market its small cars.
With well-known commentator, Jason Barlow, presenting the 107, 207 and 308 range, there are 15 clips that give in depth, high quality information to persuade would be punters into a Peugeot.

Filmed in chilly February conditions at a test track in Surrey and at a studio in Bristol, the project presented creative challenges which gave our team a real filming conundrum as they overcame snow, ice and power cuts.

The clips will also feature in Peugeot dealerships as POS film that give the interested browser a real feel for the cars.

Into Somerset Commissions Mendip Media

Mendip Media has been awarded the contract to promote Somerset as a business destination to companies in London and the South East, through online marketing and short films.

Initially funded by local authorities and supported by the private sector, the agency is majoring on a number of target sectors.

Part of the task ahead is to challenge existing perceptions about the county – perceptions that include cider, the Wurzels and country lanes filled with sheep.

Somerset is, in fact, a diverse and modern county, with a large and mature high tech industry presence (including world-leading aerospace, energy, environmental and motor) and a strong business network.

With high-speed broadband, excellent road and rail links (it’s under two hours from London) and good schools, it’s an obvious lifestyle choice for many jaded Londoners.

We’re looking forward to working with the team at Into Somerset to build on the county’s strengths through Web 2.0 and social media, and encourage inward investment in one of the leading regions in Great Britain.
