When The Drum beats out its opinion across the Internet and that opinion is not favourable, beware!
Go Outdoors recently turned out a TV ad showing a laughing middle aged couple walking the dog in the woods which set the tone of healthy, happy outdoors pursuits. Nothing wrong there you might think. Granted the music and voiceover were not great. At worst the ad seemed a little lacklustre, but not terrible.
But then came the offending frisbee.
This object with its visual sledgehammer of a message that Go Outdoors was offering 10% discounts gave The Drum’s staff writer meat to feed on. “Nothing says discount better than a Frisbee that has 10% printed on it”, the anonymous Drum correspondent rapped out.
This point of view came under the heading ‘The Marketing Weak Award’. Oh dear!
The banter in The Drum comments column went on and on, as the marketing chatteratti got the bit between its teeth on the rights and wrongs of direct punchy messaging versus creative ‘John Lewis’ fare.
Well, if you put it out there and it flops you’ve got to take the stick. But for me, Go Outdoors attempt to move away from its usual serving of ‘shouty man’ TV ads is welcome.
